Excellence in Undergraduate Research

Are you working in a research lab?  If so, check out the funding opportunities for services, supplies, and travel to support that research.  The Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Department wants to help you be successful in your research endeavors and to encourage you to present your research accomplishments at conferences!

Fall/Spring Opportunities

  • Funds to conduct research in labs of CBE faculty.  Submit a one-page description of the research project, including the faculty mentor and how funds will be expended through the end of the semester.  Requests should not exceed $500 and may be used only for supplies and services directly related to the research outcomes.  Send proposals to Dr. Jessop (julie-jessop@uiowa.edu) by November 1, 2007 (fall semester awards) and by April 1, 2008 (spring semester awards).  Students are eligible for only one research award during their academic career.
  • Travel awards for students to present their research at national conferences.  Submit an abstract to the conference registration website and then present the research at the national conference.  Email a copy of the submitted abstract and estimated travel costs (conference registration, airfare and/or mileage, hotel, meals, etc.) to Dr. Jessop (julie-jessop@uiowa.edu).  The amount of the award will be up to $500, and awards will be paid after the conference.  Students are eligible for only one national conference travel award an academic year.

Spring Opportunities

  • Funds for ChemE Car project development (teams must contain at least three students). Submit a budget plan for up to $500, to be used for supplies and services needed to build prototypes and final car. Send plans to Dr. Jessop (julie-jessop@uiowa.edu) by March 9, 2008.  Awards will be decided and distributed before the AICHE regional conference.  Up to three groups will receive funding.
  • Travel awards for students to present their research at the 2008 AIChE Regional conference at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Submit an abstract to the conference registration website and then present the research at the AIChE regional conference.  The first 10 students who send a copy of their submitted “Paper Competition Registration Form” to Dr. Jessop (julie-jessop@uiowa.edu) are eligible for the award.  The amount of the award will be $120, and awards will be paid after the conference.  In addition to the travel award from Iowa, students are also competing in the AIChE paper competition by presenting at the regional conference.
  • Monetary Awards for Research Excellence based on poster presentations at the College of Engineering Research Open House on April 10, 2008. Awards will be in three divisions: Seniors ($300), Juniors ($200) and Sophomores/First-year Students ($100).  Register the research poster and provide an abstract through the College registration website.  The awards will be announced at the research banquet the day after the poster session.
